Kidney Stones in Children

A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in a kidney when substances that are normally found in the urine become highly concentrated. A stone may stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract. Kidney stones vary in size. A small stone may pass out of the body causing little or no pain. A larger stone may get stuck along the urinary tract and can block the flow of urine, causing severe pain or blood that can be seen in the urine.

Deadly Drug Resistant Shigella Outbreaks Trigger Concern at the CDC

Shigella bacteria resistant to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin has sickened people in 32 states and Puerto Rico since May 2014. Research by the CDC has found that the drug-resistant illness is being repeatedly introduced as ill travelers return to the U.S. and then infect others. The result has been a series of outbreaks around the country. The drug resistance of this strain of Shigella is alarming to health officials because Shigella is the third leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in the U.S.
