Researchers reported the first evidence that a new class of drugs known to dramatically lower cholesterol may also reduce risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious consequences of cardiovascular disease. The drugs represent the most important new class of cholesterol-lowering medications since the first statin was approved in 1987.
A Stem Cell Cure for Blindness?
The first patient has received a pioneering human embryonic stem cell operation in the U.K. that doctors hope will be effective against a common cause of blindness. In the procedure, these cells are used to replace those at the back of the eye that are diseased with the condition, through a specially engineered patch inserted behind the retina. The operation offers significant hope that those who have lost their sight to the disease can have their vision restored.
